Light Painting Workshops
Light Painting is the art form of using handheld lights to paint a picture or scene while the shutter of a camera is left open during a long exposure photograph. Light painting takes us back to basics with the first principles of all photography and film: capturing light.
Overseen by our professional filmmakers, the participants will learn to operate the camera equipment and, in a room that can be completely blacked out, will take turns to create their images.
What packages do we offer?
Half Day Workshops
-
With a quick set up, half day sessions are a brilliant option to fit in with the rest of your schedule. Over a few hours, all the participants will have the chance to light paint a few set challenges and see the results.
Full Day Workshops
-
Work together to create one big and impressive image from lots of individual light paintings. Full Day Workshops offer participants a hands-on experience with the equipment and software, as well as the light painting itself.
Combo Workshops
-
Looking for something more ambitious? Light Painting Workshops can be combined with our stop-motion Animation Workshop to create your very own animated film! Careful attention and commitment required.
What key skills do the students learn?
Creativity: First and foremost, light painting is all about coming up with creative ideas for images, and then posing the question – ‘How do we make this happen?’
Communication: Creating a light painting requires close communication between the camera operator and the painters.
Practical Camera Skills: On a light painting workshop, you learn about the manual settings of a camera, and understand how exposure, shutterspeed and ISO work together to help you create an artwork.
Teamwork: A light painting often relies on a choreographed set of movements to help the image come together. A great painting is often the result of great teamwork.
How can light painting link with the National Curriculum?
Light painting is perfect for combining Science and Technology lessons as a creative way to teach the principles of light. It’s also a great option for enrichment and after-school activities.
By exploring the principles of light, students engage in hands-on, creative experimentation, fostering a deep understanding of physics and optics.
This interdisciplinary approach not only enhances scientific knowledge but also promotes artistic expression, aligning with the educational goals of promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.
